Traveling on a budget in your can be an exciting and rewarding experience. But we have to budget to make sure we can do everything we want.

Save these practical tips to help you make the most of your adventures without breaking the bank:

Plan and Research:

  • Research destinations where the cost of living is lower or consider off-season travel for cheaper accommodations and flights. We loved Sicily this winter as it was cheap all around!
  • Use budget travel websites, apps, and forums to find deals and get insider tips from fellow travelers.

Set a Realistic Budget:

  • Determine a daily or weekly budget for accommodation, food, transportation, and activities.
  • We use Monzo to keep track of our daily budget whilst travelling. On the app you can set daily budgets for food, transport, activities, eating out and more. It’s a really easy and hassle free way to budget.
  • Consider hidden costs such as visas, travel insurance, and local transportation.

Travel Off-Peak:

  • Off-peak seasons often mean lower prices for flights, accommodation, and attractions.
  • Avoid traveling during holidays and school vacation periods.

Accommodation Choices:

  • Opt for budget accommodation options such as hostels, guesthouses, or budget hotels. Browse budget friendly deals here.
  • Consider alternatives like couchsurfing, house-sitting, or Airbnb for unique experiences.

Transportation Savings:

  • Use budget airlines, buses, or trains instead of more expensive modes of transportation.
  • Our favourite app to use is OMIO for up to date public transport and affordable prices.
  • Walk or use public transportation within cities instead of relying on taxis.

Eat Like a Local:

  • Explore local markets and street food for affordable and authentic meals.
  • Cook simple meals if your accommodation has a kitchen to save money on dining out.

Free Activities:

  • Take advantage of free attractions, museums, and walking tours in the destination.
  • Explore nature by hiking or enjoying the outdoors without spending money.

  • While it may seem like an extra cost, travel insurance can save you money in case of emergencies, medical issues, or trip cancellations.

  • If you’re a student or under 30, explore discounts on transportation, accommodation, and entrance fees to attractions.

Pack Light:

  • Avoid extra baggage fees by packing light and bringing only the essentials.
  • Invest in versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched.
  • Airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair allow a “underseat bag”, we used these for Sicily which allowed us to travel for £19.99 each way.

Use Public Wi-Fi:

  • Save on international data charges by using public Wi-Fi for communication and navigation.
  • The best places for good WiFi is normally in local Cafes or in your accommodation.
  • However, if you prefer to have data we recommend using the “Three Mobile PAYG Voice SIM Pack – 10GB” this is £10 on Amazon and is perfect for a 4 week trip. We used this when we went to Florida and works perfectly. just make sure you activate it before you set off on your adventure!

Flexible Itinerary:

  • Stay flexible with your plans to take advantage of last-minute deals or discounts.
  • Be open to adjusting your schedule based on local recommendations and opportunities.

Earn While Traveling:

  • Consider remote work, freelancing, or finding temporary jobs in the places you visit to supplement your travel funds.
