City breaks are always a great idea but in the recent years they have gone from a getaway for a reasonable price to almost costing the same as a week away on a beach holiday.
This is how we went to Rome for £662 per couple for 3 nights.
When looking for flights we researched which airports offered the best deals around us. We looked on numerous websites including Jet2, EasyJet, Ryanair, Kayak and Expedia. My personal favourite is through Kayak and this time it was Manchester Airport with Ryanair that was the cheapest.
Flights = £300 with Small Bag, Cabin Bag and Priority both ways. You could make it cheaper if you only used the small undersea bags.
(These flights were for the start of March but you can still get similar prices until around mid-June. After this you will start the get the Summer prices.)

Now onto the accommodation, when doing the initial research it almost seemed impossible to go to Rome without it costing a lot or being way out of the centre. Package holidays just weren’t cutting it and cost a ridiculous amount for a 3 night stay. Through Hotels.com we found “Hotel Elite” a 3* hotel in the heart of the city, a 5 minute walk away from the Spanish Steps and 10 minute walk to Trevi Fountain!
Hotel = £301 including City Tax for 3 nights. We would recommend booking through the hotel’s actual website. This is because the price is in Euros so when you come to pay for the hotel it ends up being cheaper in Pounds.

HOTEL REVIEW: Hotel Elite was a great hotel and everything we needed for our stay in Rome. It was clean, up to date and we couldn’t have got a better location. 10/10 and we would recommend to anyone.
When you organise your own holiday you also have to take into consideration on how to get from the airport to the city. We booked a taxi through Bookings.com which was reliable and a great experience in itself, on the way into the city our driver gave us a tour of Rome explaining all of its history. It cost £62 per couple for a taxi transfer there and back.
Taxi Transfer = £62 per couple (Based on 2 couples on this trip).
Would you class this as an affordable city break?
