Whilst travelling around Greece, Turkey and Sicily we found some amazing ‘hidden gems’ in the lesser-known parts of each destination. Hidden gems, or lesser-known destinations, can offer a variety of unique and enriching experiences. Here are some benefits of exploring hidden gems:
Authenticity: Hidden gems are often less commercialized and more authentic, providing a genuine and unfiltered experience of the local culture, traditions, and way of life. This authenticity can be a refreshing change from more popular tourist destinations.
We experienced this when we visited Enna, Sicily. Such a beautiful city, situated on the top of a mountain. You would find the local Sicilian’s going into cafes for a Espresso and then they would carry on with their day.

Less Crowded: Unlike popular tourist spots, hidden gems are typically less crowded. This allows for a more relaxed and intimate travel experience, without the hustle and bustle of large crowds. It also provides an opportunity to connect with locals on a more personal level.
One of our favourite places for this was Licata, Sicily. A locals town full with lots of great cafes, restaurants and a lovely beach! This is a great place to stop off if you’re road-tripping around Sicily.

Lower Costs: Hidden gems are generally more budget-friendly than well-known destinations. Accommodations, meals, and activities may be more affordable, making it an attractive option for travelers on a budget.
Finike, Türkiye is the perfect example of this! It is a locals town a couple of hours away from the city of Antalya. Everything here is so so cheap! The restaurants and cafes are all incredible too. We went to Steak restaurant here and it worked out £20pp, baring in mind 2 of the steaks were T-bone steak and 1 was Fillet steak with SO many sides. It was incredible. For food and drinks we recommend Orange Cafe, Kasap Murat Et Steak Restaurant, White Angel (ridiculously cheap and amazing pizza), Nesil Balik (Best fish in town!), Yemen Kahvesi and Cafe De Valencia. The local farmers market is great to visit too.

Preservation of Culture and Environment: By choosing to visit lesser-known destinations, travelers can contribute to the preservation of local cultures and environments. Tourism can have both positive and negative impacts, and by focusing on hidden gems, visitors can minimize their ecological footprint and support sustainable tourism practices.
Lemnos, Greece is home to Venetian Castle of Myrina which is said to be the best preserved castle in Greece! You can visit pretty much see all of the castle ruins and it shows a perfect view of the island. As well as the amazing history of this island, the locals make it a welcoming experience whilst here on the island.

Discovery of Unique Attractions: Hidden gems often boast unique and undiscovered attractions that may not be featured in mainstream travel guides. Exploring these off-the-beaten-path places can lead to surprising and memorable experiences that aren’t part of the typical tourist itinerary.
Myra, Türkiye is one of the most important towns of ancient Lycia, located in southwest Türkiye. Its early history is unknown. St. Paul is known to have visited the city, and in the 4th century St. Nicholas was its bishop. Myra, Demre is home to the ancient city and has some incredible tombs in the cliff side. It is a historical site with visiting!

Escape from the Ordinary: If you’re seeking an escape from the ordinary and want to avoid the clichés associated with popular tourist destinations, hidden gems offer a chance to discover new and unconventional places that may be off the radar of most travelers.
Thasos, Greece is a perfect greek island for this seeking a relaxing escape without the tourist side of travelling. From amazing restaurants, cafes, bars, beach clubs to amazing hikes… this island has something for everyone!

Personal Growth: Traveling to hidden gems may require a more adventurous and open-minded approach. This can lead to personal growth as you navigate through unfamiliar territories, engage with different cultures, and step out of your comfort zone.
Unique Photography Opportunities: Lesser-known destinations often offer unique and unspoiled landscapes, architecture, and cultural scenes, providing photographers with fresh and captivating subjects. Exploring hidden gems can result in stunning and original travel photographs.
In summary, traveling to hidden gems can provide a more authentic, intimate, and enriching travel experience, offering a break from the crowds and a chance to discover the beauty and uniqueness of lesser-known places.
